photography assignments.

hey blog friends.
i have been keeping really busy lately.
(hopefully less so now that i told my work that they're killing me and to back off!)
one welcomed time-taker is my photography class. this week we had to hand in our first 3 assignments. the reception of my photos seemed great, but i haven't seen my grade yet. haha.

assignment #1 was a study in composition.
we had to create photos with:

balance
symmetry

a frame within a frame

using the "rule of thirds"

dramatic angles
we also had to take a single photo and using only cropping, have it look 3 different ways.

assignment #2 was all about finding light & its variations

& #3 was in the studio - playing for the first time with how light & objects interact.

overall it was a lot of fun!
next we start doing studio portraits, which i am really looking forward to learning.
i'm going to hunt and drool over some old hollywood black & whites now.
have a great weekend :)

p.s. thank you frank, katie, bry & kate for being such great models

fun things.

just want to wish you canadians a very happy thanksgiving!
we had a nice quiet dinner here. i enjoyed cooking the big meal and i'm very thankful that steve did all the dishes after. <3 and we have leftovers for days.

also - i forgot to tell you that www.melaniegodecki.com is finally here!
my photos are there, as a sort of online portfolio, especially if you live in the toronto area ;)
and finally, something too cute to not share. i walked to the nearest goodwill in search of halloween decor last week and stumbled upon knitomatic - on bathurst near st clair.
they have a knitted bike. it's awesome.
and i love these colours of wool - they make me want to knit a million things for fall. (but i think i will have to sign up for some of their lessons or classes - i've forgotten most of what i learned from youtube last year.

hope you had a wonderful weekend.

using just a teeny amount of your vintage fabric for a craft. fabric ring.

i don't know about you, but when i find vintage craft supplies, fabric, beads, etc, i find it very hard to use them. it has to be the perfect, worthy, not going to fail, 'i'll never regret cutting the fabric' craft.
this was easy enough, it used about a 4 inch square altogether.
you will need: scissors, some fabric, glue, a ring base & if you like - a bead
cut the fabric into circles. i chose ones that were just under an inch across.
(i cut 16 but only used 8 for the final product)
fold the circles in half, then in half again to end up with a triangle shape. glue to the ring base.
continue layering the triangles with glue until your ring is nice & full. then add a bead to the centre.
voila.
i think this would work even better with lighter weight fabric than i used. i have some sheer blue fabric to try next. have fun and let me know how it goes if you make one :)
p.s. is anyone else mourning the loss of daylight yet?
it's already too dark to photograph crafts at night!

10 down. 12 to go!

good bye september!
and good bye accomplished goals.

yesterday one of my missions was aborted. not my choice.
i went to get my hair cut trimmed. i explained to the hairdresser that i was growing my hair out, and that i just wanted a little more shape put into the hair. i was getting that awful hair-dent-from-the-back-of-your-neck awkward length thing that i hate, and i wanted it angled a bit so the front would be longer. 30 seconds later, 4 inches of my hair falls to the floor and i have a bob again. what!?
ahhhh.
i don't mind the new hair, but listening skills should be a required course in hair school.
i am going to cross this one off the list anyway - my hair this year was longer than i've had it in a long time, and even though i am terrible at styling it, i did put in more effort than my go-to ponytail.
here's a collage i was too lazy to make in photoshop and so used photovisi.com. :P
there you have it - from short to curly to long(ish) to updo to pulled back. hurray :)

in more important goal news - i am taking a big step in the mastering of flash photography.
i started going to school! i am really excited about it. i've enrolled at ryerson university and am taking my first (of many i hope) professional photography course. next week we get to start playing in the studio. i can't wait :)

i also accomplished the missing 1/2 of my baking goal - waffle iron cookies.
they were a lot of fun.
they're also posted here with a recipe link.

october should be a good month! my mom's 50th birthday is coming up - so i'm going to my hometown. i love halloween and am prepping my costume, and i'm feeling really inspired to work on the things that i love. (or at least buying the supplies for them. heh)

thinking about blogging....

the Lemon & Raspberry blog is hosting a better blogging workshop next week, and it's got me thinking.

i know that this blog is quite random, somewhere in between crafts, travel, food, a huge heap of photography and anything else i feel like throwing in here.

but what are your favourite things about it?
is there anything you'd like to see more of? suggestions?

i assume in the workshop will be told to regularly post.  which i am completely guilty of not doing.
i do get better in the winter, when huddling under a pile of blankets with my laptop is the best way to spend the evening.  winter is much better for routines - it's so much less social, for me at least.
would love to hear your thoughts.  thanks :)
